Jobbik Stands Out for Universities’ Autonomy

MTI-Hungary Today 2020.06.25.

An MP of opposition Jobbik has demanded that government plans to re-organise universities under control of new foundations should not curb the autonomy of those institutions.

Koloman Brenner said it was unacceptable that ministers should be delegated to the boards of those foundations, as proposed by the government.

He submitted a bill of amendment in the case of the six previously restructured institutions and the University of Theater and Film Arts (SZFE), he proposes that only the rector and deans be included in the governing body of the foundation, not government-appointed ones.

Minister Rejects Theater University Students’ Proposal on Changes

The government must ensure that everybody has equal access to culture, which requires “more support rather than government appointees’ control”, he said, adding that “curbing the freedom of art invokes the darkest communist times”.
