Opposition party Jobbik has proposed that the Budapest Metropolitan Assembly should declare 2020 Trianon Memorial Year on the occasion of the centenary of the Trianon Peace Treaty that stripped Hungary of two-thirds of its territory.
Marcell Tokody, a Budapest representative of the right-wing opposition party, told a press conference on Wednesday that the ruling parties in the national legislature had voted against Trianon being commemorated in 2020. “The government doesn’t even want to remember this shameful diktat,” he said, adding that Jobbik wants to put the issue on the Budapest assembly’s agenda.
It cannot be permitted that Hungary and Budapest do not remember “the greatest tragedy of Hungarians,” he said.
