Hungary’s Population Decline Continues As Number Of Births And Deaths Both Decrease

By Tamás Székely // 2016.08.26.

In the first half of 2016, 43,594 children were born in Hungary, 1.8% less than in the same period last year, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Friday. The number of deaths was 62,978, which meant a decrease of 9.5% compared to January–June 2015, KSH said. The natural decrease was 19,384 persons, 5,833 lower than a year earlier.

The number of births changed to slightly increased in Northern Hungary and Northern Great Plain (by 0.7% and 0.3% respectively), while it declined in the other regions, the report shows. The extent of decrease was considerable in Southern Great Plain and Southern Transdanubia (4.7% and 4.6% respectively). The number of deceases fell in every region, especially in Southern Transdanubia, Northern Hungary and Southern Great Plain (by 11% in each region). The most significant decline (36%) was registered in Northern Great Plain.

KSH’s fresh data also points out that the long-lasting considerable rise in the number of marriages has continued during the year. The 21,921 marriages registered in the first half of the year exceeded by 19% the value a year earlier. The 2016 leap-day didn’t have a significant effect on the increase in the number of matrimonies in January–June. During the first half of the year, especially the rise in February–April was considerable. The number of marriages increased in all regions and the largest growth was registered in Northern Hungary and Northern Great Plain (33% and 32% respectively).
