Hungary’s Pipeline Operator FGSZ Restarts Gas Export To Ukraine

Tamás Székely 2015.01.12.

Hungary resumed gas deliveries to Ukraine, Ukraine’s gas transmission system operator Ukrtransgaz said on Sunday. Supply was restored at 11am on Saturday. According to the Ukrainian side a daily 2.7 million cubic metres of gas will be imported. Last year, Ukraine imported a total of 600 million cubic metres of gas from Hungary, Ukrtransgaz noted.

FGSZ, Hungary’s gas transmission system operator, also confirmed on Monday that gas exports to Ukraine had resumed. About 2.6 million cubic metres of gas were delivered to Ukraine on Saturday, FGSZ said on its website. “I can confirm that gas delivery from Hungary to Ukraine has begun,” FGSZ spokeswoman Edina Lakatos told AFP in an email. Hungary has the pipeline capacity to send up to 6.1 billion cubic metres of natural gas to Ukraine annually, or a daily maximum of 16.8 million cubic metres.

Hungarian pipeline operator FGSZ decided to suspend gas deliveries to Ukraine on September 25, 2014, in order to top up domestic reserves. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the following day that the filling of Hungary’s gas stores would be accelerated noting an agreement with large-scale deliveries from GAZPROM had been reached. Orbán said Hungary had to be prepared for the possibility of a shutdown of the pipeline on its border with Ukraine through which it gets deliveries of Russian gas.
