Hungary’s Football Team Climbs To Best Ever Place In FIFA Rankings

Tamás Székely 2015.12.04.

Hungary advanced 13 notches from 33rd to 20th place in the latest FIFA soccer world rankings published on Wednesday. This is the highest place for Hungary’s national eleven to occupy since FIFA published its first rankings in 1993. The team’s latest rise can be attributed to recent victories in Euro 2016 playoffs against Norway (1:0, 2:1).

Meanwhile the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ) has confirmed that interim coach Bernd Storck and his staff including World Cup winner Andreas Möller have signed extended contracts until after next year’s UEFA European Championships in France. Next year’s tournament will be Hungary’s first major tournament for 30 years and their first Euros for 44 years since they finished third in 1972.

Another piece of good news is that national team forward Krisztián Németh won the 2015 AT&T Goal of the Year award in US Major League Soccer (MLS). Sporting Kansas City footballer received the award for his stunning solo run and finish in the 83rd minute of a 1-0 win at the Portland Timbers on 3rd of October. “It’s an honor to win this award and I’m very appreciative of all the support they showed me this past year, Németh said.
