Hungary’s AWS Advances to the Grand Finale of Eurovision 2018
The alternative metal band AWSis representing Hungary at the second semi-final of the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, Portugal, after winning Hungary’s national selection with the song Viszlát nyár. Alongside 25 other performers of out of the original 43 contestants, they have made it into the grand finale, which will take place this Saturday.
AWS was formed in 2006 by Bence Brucker, Dániel Kökényes, Örs Siklósi and Áron Veress. Their music is characterized by diversity, powerful performances, and sudden changes, utilizing metal, psychedelic rock, alternative and post-rock styles.

The ten qualifiers from the second semi-final are Serbia, Moldova, Hungary, Ukraine, Sweden, Australia, Norvegia, Denmark and Slovenia.

However, although they said they “knew that” – just like at the Hungarian national selection -, when the final decision came, the band was quite surprised at the outcome; you can watch the announcement below:
The final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 will take place on 12 May 2018 at the Altice Arena in Lisbon, Portugal, as last year the Portugal Salvador Sobral won the contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. AWS will compete with contenders from 26 countries, and will be the 21st act to take the stage. Despite making its Eurovision debut in 1994, Hungary has never won the song contest: the closest the country has come was in 1994 and in 2014, when Hungarian acts placed fourth and fifth respectively. Last year, Joci Pápai finished eighth with Origo.
