German officials wanted to light up the Allianz Arena in rainbow colors in reaction to a recently passed Hungarian law that bans “promoting or displaying homosexuality.” In response to that notion, Hungary has lit up its famous stadiums and even the National Opera House.
The idea came from the fans of the Ferencváros TC Club. They requested that Gábor Kubatov, president of the football club and party director of ruling Fidesz, to light up the Groupama Arena in the colors of the national flag. Other sports clubs quickly joined the project and also lit up their buildings in the colors of red, white, and green.
