The government has decided to double the number of soldiers protecting Hungary’s southern border, the head of the prime minister’s office said on Thursday.
The pressure of migration has increased on the border section in question, with an attempt by 80 migrants to break through on Tuesday, Gergely Gulyás said. Five of them managed to get through but they were all arrested and a criminal procedure was launched against them, he added. If found guilty, they can be expelled from the country, he said.

After two years of “relatively calm conditions” the situation at the southern border has deteriorated and the pressure is expected to remain significant in the upcoming period, Gulyás said. At present, there are more than 100,000 migrants on the Balkan route, he added.
