Hungary’s President János Áder Will Not Be Re-Elected, Christian Democrat MP Hints

Tamás Székely 2016.05.18.

Hungarian news television HírTV captured a strange moment at the meeting of the Parliament’s Justice Committee last week. The video, published only on Tuesday evening, reveals that György Rubovszky, the Committees’s head telling vice-head Imre Vas that “there is no way [for him] to be re-elected, because Viktor [Prime Minister Viktor Orbán] won’t let that happen.” Although Rubovszky, MP for minor ruling party KDNP (Christian Democrats), did not mention János Áder’s name explicitly, he referred to the President in other ways too.

As János Áder’s presidential mandate will expire next year, Hungarian media already in search for a new president. Áder would probably accept to extend his term, however, according to media reports neither the Prime Minister, nor the majority of ruling Fidesz and KDNP lawmakers prefer that option due to Áder’s practice of sending back laws to the Parliament. News portal origo.hu reported previously that either József Pálinkás or Szilveszter Vizi E could be the next Hungarian President. Both “candidates” were former heads of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
