And the Busó arrived, with their scary masks carved in wood and big woolly cloaks, to scare the winter away (or the Turkish from the Ottoman empire, depending which legend you choose as origin of the festival). More than 500 hundred of them were walking in the town of Mohács, in southern Hungary. Busójárás (meaning Busó-walking) is a 6 days festival and in 2009 was inscribed on the Unesco’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. After so many years in Hungary this was my first time and it didn’t disappoint. A big parade of the Busó, followed by traditional dances and finishing with a massive bonfire in the main square, which really helped fight the cold temperatures 😊 More photos coming soon!
