Last night and this morning, the first considerable amount of snow hit Hungary. Even in the capital, the snow cover has grown several centimeters thick. The snowfall also caused – mostly transport-related – inconveniences.
Drivers are warned to check the condition of their vehicles and public transport users should expect delays. Both BKV and MÁV have experienced severe delays, some trains running 2-3 hours late, while buses and suburban railway lines also had problems with keeping their timetables. According to hvg.hu, the capital only found half as many people for snow removal works as needed. In the second district, even traffic wardens helped clean the roads instead of fining. Budapest Airport also announced delays, mainly with departing flights. On the arrival side, half an hour delays were expected, but some departing flights were expected to be hours late.
However, despite the inconveniences, the snow provides striking views, postcard-like photos, and offers plenty of splendid moments for winter fun-lovers to enjoy. We have collected some pictures of the beautiful, snow-covered areas around Hungary:
