Hungary Eyes Lifting Of Russian Embargo, State Secretary Confirms

Tamás Székely 2015.05.06.

At the Hungarian-Russian economic forum of the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI), László Szabó, Hungarian state secretary of foreign affairs and trade, said that the Russian market was very important for Hungary, therefore Hungarian enterprises must be ready for the opportunities after the end of the Russian embargo.

Although Russia had been for a long time Hungary’s most important non-EU trading partner; Hungary as an EU member supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and it also voted for sanctions against Russia, László Szabó said. As a result of Russia’s economic weight, however, it is essential to find a peaceful solution for the conflict as soon as possible, he added. According to the state secretary, the Hungarian companies should be ready to roll immediately once Russian sanctions are lifted.

At the end of April, experts of Russia’s plant and food authority completed inspections at Hungarian meat and dairy companies needed for Hungarian products to regain entry to the Russian market. The farm ministry said the aim of the “technical” screening was to allow the companies that have passed it to begin exporting their products to Russia immediately once trade restrictions are loosened.
