Before Monday’s victory against the Czech Republic, Hungary’s men’s basketball team had gone 48 years without a win in EuroBasket. Now, the team is guaranteed a spot in the tournament’s next phase, the Round of 16.

Yesterday’s game, held in the Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), saw Hungarian coach Stojan Ivkovic’s team triumph 80-71 over Romania. The team was led by shooting guard Dávid Vojvoda, who scored 26 points, and small forward Ádám Hanga, who scored 25. Romania’s strongest performer was Andrei Mandache, with 24 points.

Since 1935, Hungary and and Romania have played each other 12 times in basketball. Currently, Hungary leads Romania 9-3 in the rivalry; the teams last met in the 2003 EuroBasket, when each team won a match on their home turf.

While there is still one game left to be played in Group C, with Hungary’s wins the team have simultaneously secured a slot in the upcoming Round of 16, and effectively eliminated Romania from the tournament.
