Leaders of the joint opposition gathered on Kossuth Square to light candles in front of the Parliament, commemorating the more than 25 thousand people who have fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic in Hungary.
Representing Jobbik, the Socialists (MSZP), Momentum, Párbeszéd, LMP, and the Democratic Coalition (DK), the party leaders lit candles that were shaped to make out the number 25,000.
They did not hold speeches but had a moment of silence out of respect for those who have passed away.
Momentum did not attend due to being preoccupied elsewhere, but stated that they shared their condolences for the victims.
The severity of the pandemic is made strikingly clear when considering that a commemoration for 20 thousand victims was held at the beginning of April.
This took place on Margaret Island, where 20,000 stones were placed along the length of the island’s running track, each showing the age of the victim and which number they were of the 20 thousand. The event was organized by the recently established Új Világ Néppárt (New World People’s Party).
The third wave is still a severe threat, as Hungary continues to be the world leader in daily coronavirus related deaths per million. 207 people died in the last 24 hours, and 2,527 new infections were registered.
