Hungarian Students Use Skype To Reduce Education Gap Between Budapest And Villages

Number of Skype calls between Budapest and three Hungarian villages in Baranya county have significantly increased since January 2017 as three Hungarian high school students voluntarily help pupils in need to learn their school lessons via internet, abcug.hu reported.

Hungarian tenth grade students Pálma, Hana and Lili all attend one of the country’s best school, the Apáczai Csere János High School in Budapest. In the leisure time, however, they are not only having extra lessons or just hanging out with friends but also do some voluntarily work to help fellow students in the countryside in the framework of the “E-tanoda” scheme. While Pálma teaches foreign languages, history and literature, Hana and Lili helps understanding maths, physics and chemistry.
On the other side of the Skype calls, Tomi and Norbi are just two of those elementary school pupils, who regularly receive the much-needed learning help from Budapest. They live in the villages of Gilvánfa, Alsószentmárton and Magyarmecske, which are located in the Southern part of Baranya country, also known as Ormánság, one of the most underdeveloped regions of Hungary with significant Roma population. The boys are also motivated by tablets, which they’ve got by the programme.
Unfortunately, Tomi’s and Norbi’s families live under very difficult circumstances, which negatively affect the boys’ school performances. However, thanks to the weekly “E-tanoda” sessions, supervised by the founder of the programme Tibor Prievera in Budapest as well as local teacher Balázs Faller in Baranya county, the school grades of the boys have started to show significant improvement. According to the report by abcug.hu, the E-tanoda scheme has set a promising example to follow.
