Hungarian Invention Branded “The World’s Most Villainous Alarm Clock” Guaranteed To Get You Out Of Bed

Ferenc Sullivan 2015.01.06.

Have you ever felt physically unable to get out of bed and now matter how loud your phone clanked, you just kept pressing the snooze button? Hungarian developers Csaba Tóth and Balázs Némethi have come up with an unconventional solution to the problem: a smartphone app which charges you to press the snooze button. It doesn’t run on a sophisticated motion detection algorithm. It simply puts you in the decision of menkind in the 21st century: Money vs Time.

It must be a joke, right? Yes, it should be, as it is on 9gag – but it’s not. Snopy is real and out there!

When the alarm is on, you have the chance to decide: you wake up or keep on sleeping for some money. While the idea of resorting to such an extreme solution may baffle you if you have no trouble getting out of bed in the morning, the app seems popular: although it is only available since yesterday, 300 people have already downloaded it.

As co-inventor Balázs Némethi explained, the app was inspired by a post on 9gag.com, which showed a similar but imaginary idea. At present, Snopy is available for iPhone only – the Android version is promised for February.

One snooze costs around half a dollar (HUF 130), which is deducted from your pre-paid balance – four packages from $2 to $50 are available – if you sleep on. Rates are fixed at the moment, but developers are planning them to become flexibly adjustable depending on how important it is for you to get up at a given time. After the deduction of Apple’s commission, proceeds go to further development.
