The green opposition LMP party held an event to join a global protest against the planned EU-US and EU-Canada free trade deals. The TTIP and CETA pacts will bring disadvantages to people, widen social disparities and lead to the deterioration of the environment and the quality of food, a lawmaker of the party said at the US embassy.
Erzsébet Schmuck said that the free trade agreements would serve only the interests of multinational companies “and political leaders living from them,” whereas all others including working people, SME-s and food quality conscious consumers would suffer the negative consequences of these pacts. She criticised the European Commission for releasing practically no information about the actual content of the planned agreements which she said are being negotiated with the public’s exclusion. She also criticised the Hungarian government for supporting the agreements which she said went against national interests. The agreements aim to dismantle barriers to the free movement of capital, one of which is the food-safety regime that has so far prevented “the Hungarian market from getting flooded with US poultry products treated with hormone and antibiotics,” she said.
On the Global Day of Action protests were held at 700 locations around the world. Tens of thousands marched across Germany where more than 200 demonstrations took place, while in Barcelona around 50,000 people marched through city streets. Meanwhile more than 7,000 gathered in front of the Austrian parliament chanting slogans such as “Stop TTIP”, “humanity and the environment before profit”, and “TTIP is a threat to democracy, and people’s health”, Reuters reported.
