Hungarian Cup: Title-Holder Ferencváros Beat Unlucky Videoton To Reach Semi-Finals

League leader Ferencvárosi TC came back from behind to beat a solid Videoton FC side in a Hungarian Cup quarter final clash on Wednesday evening. The 2-1 away victory means that the Budapest-based club made the semi-finals of the Hungarian Cup despite suffering a one-goal defeat from Videoton at the Groupama Arena two weeks ago.

The second leg in Felcsút’s Pancho Arena did not start better for the Green-whites as the Székesfehérvár-based home side scored with a nice header in the first half. German head coach Thomas Doll’s team needed to score two goals in the second half to qualify to the next round. However, top scorer Dániel Böde came in for the second half and scored a real poacher’s effort ten minutes later. Fifteen minutes before the final whistle Ferencváros received a penalty for a Videoton defender touching the ball with his arm. Although Winger Roland Lamah hit the post, the rebound bounced off goalkeeper Ádám Kovacsik sending the ball to the back of the net. The tie ended in a 2-2 draw, but Ferencváros scored two away goals to reach the final four.

As for the rest of the teams, Debreceni VSC trashed arch-rival Nyíregyháza 5-0 (7-1 on aggregate), Újpest FC easily beat lower-league side FC Tiszaújváros 2-0 (10-1 in aggregate). while first division rock bottom Békéscsaba sunk third-division side Kozármisleny 1-1 (3-2 on aggregate). In the semi finals, Ferencváros will face Debrecen, while Újpest will play against Békéscsaba.
