In cooperation with the National Center for Public Health (NNK) and the University of Debrecen, with the support of the Ministry of Human Resources (EMMI), the development of the new coronavirus vaccine has begun, the Ministry of Human Resources said on Thursday.
Both the NNK and the University of Debrecen have a wealth of experience and scientific background, as well as state-of-the-art facilities that enable this significant medical research, the ministry added.
Researchers at the ministry’s background institution, the national security lab of NNK, were among the first in Europe to successfully isolate the new coronavirus that causes the Covid-19 disease in mid-March. They have already isolated the virus from 30-40 different individuals, which provides the basis for the ongoing joint vaccine development.
In the current phase of the research, the different virus strains to be used during the development process are first selected, then the cell cultures that are most suitable for vaccine development are tested. After this, efficacy studies are carried out and testing on animals can also begin.
According to the ambitious plans, small-scale production of the vaccine could begin as soon as October, the Ministry said.
