Hungarian U17 basketball team won the bronze match against organizing country Czech Republic in Pilsen, at the Women’s Basketball World Championship. The heroic match came to a narrow victory of 67-61, with coach Andrea Mészárosné Kovács leading the girls to victory. The success has been long-awaited as Hungarian basketball saw little glory in recent times.
Two players of the national team, Virág Kiss and Debóra Dubei, have been chosen into the championship’s all-star team, alongside Americans Joyner Holmes, Katie Samuelson and Spanish Angela Salvadores, later was chosen MVP. The Hungarian team also beat the Czechs in the group rounds.
The final was played between USA and Spain, where the exciting match came to a 77-75 score, giving the narrow victory to the Americans, making them three time world champions in a row. The Hungarian bronze is considered a great success for the country’s basketball.
