Right wingers in the European Parliament supported Ursula von der Leyen’s winning the post of European Commission president, while the majority of the Left voted against her, Hungary’s MEP Balázs Hidvéghi told Hungarian reporters after the vote on Tuesday night.
The 13 MEPs of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz voted for Von der Leyen, who won with a mere 9 votes, which “shows that she would not be president without Fidesz’s votes”, Hidvéghi said.

Hidvéghi insisted that his party had “advanced its confidence” to Von der Leyen, but added that Fidesz has “firm expectations” for the EC president-elect. He voiced hope that her election would “offer a chance for more balanced and more sober European Union policies” and that her presidency would “open a new chapter in terms of the EU’s migration policy”.
