The Hungarian government announced it would be launching an “information campaign” focusing on Brussels’ plans which allegedly promote and facilitate immigration.
The government announced its campaign in a Facebook post:
The government will launch an information campaign focusing on Brussels’ plans. Everyone has a right to know about the current proposals which fundamentally endanger Hungary’s security and encourage immigration.
The faces of the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros serve as a backdrop to the poster’s accompanying text: “You have a right to know what Brussels is planning. They would like to introduce a compulsory migrant quota, weaken the member states’ border protection rights and facilitate immigration with migrant visas.”
At a press conference last week, government spokesperson István Hollik said that Hungarian citizens have a right to be informed about any plans that “fundamentally threaten Hungary’s security.” Hollik justified the campaign by claiming that Brussels continues to attempt to force through plans in support of immigration despite Hungary’s objections.
Brussels’ plans, he said, also include giving more money to organizations that support immigration. At the same time, the European Union threatens to punish any member states that oppose immigration by cutting their funding, he added. Hollik warned that if these steps were to be carried out, Hungary would become “a country of immigrants.”
The government’s new campaign serves to place great emphasis on Fidesz’s — the most powerful party in the EPP — position on immigration ahead of the European Parliament election in May.
