Now the winter has set in and Christmas is increasingly in the air, who wouldn’t fancy getting on the ice on one of Budapest’s several ice rinks, situated both in the city centre and further afield. Here are two of the best, both situated convenienty next to the city’s popular Advent markets:
One of the newest Christmas markets in Budapest is the Advent Feast at the Basilica, found right in front of St.Stephen’s Basilica. Though only present yearly since 2011, its downtown location, the ice-rink at its heart and the great view of the Basilica illuminated with 3D projection mapping have made it a firm favourite. This market is open from 28 November 2014 to 1 January2015.
The City Park Ice Rink, located at the edge of the Városliget just behind Heroes’ Square and adjacent to the Neo-Gothic Vajdahunyad Castle, is the largest in Budapest, with an area of 12,000 m2 (which actually makes it the largest outdoor ice rink in the entire region). The rink, which conveniently doubles a boating lake in the summer, was the location of the 2012 speed skating European championships. Its palace-like reception building, with its graceful curves and pretty towers,, is in Baroque style and looks great due to its recent renovation. The nearby, imposing Vajdahunyad Castle was actually built in 1896 for the world millennial exhibition, to show the differing styles ofarchitecture in Hungary. It is the replica of a Transylvanian Gothic royal castle, which is to be found in present-day Romania. Just below its walls, you will stumble upon the Vajdahunyad Castle Christmas Market, with food stalls, and several places to warm up with mulled wine. It is open between 1 and 23 December.
