German Elections: Hungarian Prime Minister Congratulates Angela Merkel

By Tamás Székely // 2017.09.25.

Hungarian Prime Minister has congratulated Angela Merkel on her re-election as Germany’s Chancellor on his Facebook page on Sunday. Viktor Orbán offered his congratulations both in Hungarian and German in a short message posted on the page.

The Hungarian Premier also sent an official German-language letter to Merkel, expressing his hope for further improving German-Hungarian relations as well as for “working together on Europe’s great challenges” such as “security and economic stability”.

In his regular biweekly radio interview last Friday, Orbán said Merkel is by far the best possible choice for Chancellor in Germany as far as Hungary is concerned. Her rival, Social Democrat leader Martin Schulz uses coarse language against Hungary, he said, adding that Merkel would be friendlier to Hungary than Schulz.

Although Angela Merkel won a fourth term in office on Sunday, she faces extremely difficult coalition talks with the Liberal (FDP, 10,7%) and Green parties (Die Grüne, 8,9%) to form a new German government. Anti-immigration far right party AfD won a shocking 12.6 percent of the vote, while Merkel’s conservatives (CDU/CSU, 33,2%) and Schulz’s Social Democrats (SPD, 20,5%) get one of their worst results since the Second World War.
