Gender Wage Gap Narrows In Hungary But There Is Room For Improvement

The disparity of wages earned by men and women in Hungary has narrowed dramatically, a government official has said. According to a Eurostat survey, the gap of 20% in 2012 narrowed to 14% by 2015, an economy ministry advisor told public television.

Piroska Szalai noted OECD data which indicated an even lower wage disparity of 3.8% in 2014, putting Hungary in first place on this measure among OECD countries. Szalai said the Eurostat results showed Hungary making the biggest strides in this area, largely thanks to the new career model in the teaching profession which employs many women.
Eurostat has reported that in 2015, the gender pay gap in the European Union (EU) stood at 16.3%. This means that women earned on average 84 cents for every euro earned by a man. Compared with 2010, the gender pay gap has decreased in a majority of EU Member States for which data were available. The most noticeable decreases were recorded in Belgium (from 10.2% in 2010 to 6.5% in 2015, or -3.7 percentage points), Hungary (-3.6 pp), Luxembourg (-3.2 pp), and Romania and Finland (both -3.0 pp). Across Member States, the narrowest gender pay gaps were registered in Luxembourg and Italy (both at 5.5%), and the widest in Estonia (26.9%), followed by the Czech Republic (22.5%), Germany (22%), Austria (21.7%) and the United Kingdom (20.8%).
While the gender wage gap is indeed narrowing in Hungary, women in managerial positions still earn less than their male counterparts. According to Eurostat data from 2014, proportion of women in managerial occupations is higher in Hungary (41%) than the EU average (35%), however, gender pay gap for managers is the largest in Hungary in the European Union:
