Ferencváros lost to Dynamo Kyiv 0-1 in Ukraine in the last round of the Champions League group stage. The Hungarian team, therefore, finished last in the group, missing a chance to qualify for the Europa League.
Ferencváros was in control of the game for the first half of the match. They continued to pressure the Ukrainian team after the start of the second half, it was Kyiv’s Dennis Popov who scored first, and last, with a header in the 60th minute. Ferencváros was unable to break through the Ukrainians’ defense for the rest of the match.
Had they won, FTC would have been the first Hungarian team to make it to the Europa League in 17 years. Since due to this loss, they finished last in Group G and cannot participate in the League. In the other match in Group G, Juventus defeated Barcelona 3-0, snatching first place in the group.
After the match, Ferencváros’ coach, Serhiy Rebrov said that the players should be proud of themselves. They played good football during the match. He noted that Dynamo Kyiv defended really well, but they were not on the pitch with a defensive team. It spoke to FTC’s good play that the Ukrainian team was kept on the defensive.
