György Keleti, minister of defence from 1994 to 1998, has died at the age of 74 after a long illness, his widow told MTI on Sunday.
Born in 1946 in Czechoslovakia’s Losonc (Lucenec), Keleti attended the Máté Zalka Military Technical College and the Miklós Zrínyi Military Academy and started working at the Ministry of Defence in 1977. He was the ministry’s spokesman between 1989 and 1992 before going on to serve as minister in Gyula Horn’s government.
Keleti was a Socialist lawmaker from 1992 to 2010 and served several terms as the head and deputy head of parliament’s national security and defence committees.
