At a Saturday congress to select party officials, Ferenc Gyurcsány, leader of the leftist opposition Democratic Coalition (DK), approached the stage with a guitar slung round his neck and declared that the party was “the party of the future”. Gyurcsány said that DK’s job was to show that it is capable of governing Hungary together with others, and that by next year it must demonstrate that it is ready for power.
The former Socialist PM Gyurcsány said today’s congress would start a process whereby it is shown that DK is capable of saying and doing more than “denying the regime” and of suggesting what should be done after its downfall. At the congress Ferenc Gyurcsány was reelected as party leader. Csaba Molnár, Ágnes Vadai, Péter Niedermüller, Tibor Nagy-Huszein and László Varjú were elected as deputy leaders.
Democration Coalition was one of those left-wing parties, which supported left-leaning but independent candidate Zoltán Kész from outside to win the crucial by-elections of Veszprém last Sunday. Kész’s election victory means that the ruling Fidesz-KDNP alliance will no longer have a two-thirds majority in parliament even if the government parties retain their mandate at an upcoming by-election in Tapolca on April 12.
