Foreign Minister: “Hungary Shows Exceptional Solidarity”

Tamás Székely 2017.09.18.

Hungary shows “exceptional solidarity” to Germany since Hungarian taxpayers pay to protect the Hungarian borders, thereby protecting Germany against illegal immigration, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said, in connection with an interview Chancellor Angela Merkel gave to two German newspapers. Szijjártó also said at a press conference that no Hungarians were involved in the terrorist attacks in London and Paris last Friday.

In an interview to Nordwest Zeitung and Passauer Neue Presse, Angela Merkel said refusing to show solidarity between EU member states would not be consequence-free. The Hungarian Foreign Minister said in response:

Hungary has spent over 800 million euros on border protection and has not received any assistance

Péter Szijjártó welcomed growing support for Hungary’s standpoint on migration over the last two years. “The Hungarian government has said from the beginning that there is no need to bring trouble over here, but to take help to the places where the trouble is.” The Hungarian Foreign Minister noted that Germany is an important economic partner for Hungary. “German companies are taking a big slice of EU funding destined for Hungary, but we don’t mind because they employ Hungarian people, so this situation is good for everyone,” he said.

No Hungarian involved in Paris and London attacks

Péter Szijjártó also said at a press conference that no Hungarians were involved in the terrorist attack in London on Friday morning. “We still have no information pointing to any Hungarians being involved; no calls have been made to the Hungarian Embassy or Consulate from Hungarians who need help or their relatives”, he highlighted.

Hungary assures Great Britain and France of its solidarity

“The fact that more terrorist attacks have been committed forces us to raise the question of whether it is right that European politics is still not centred on establishing and restoring security, and why security isn’t the governing principle in the debate on illegal immigration”, Szijjártó pointed out. “It should be the duty of European political leaders to restore security to Europe and the European people; this should be their responsibility instead of continuing to put forward ‘generally false arguments’ in favour of illegal immigration”, the Foreign Minister stressed.

On Friday, a terrorist attack occurred in the London underground, at Parsons Green station at the south-eastern fork of the District Line. According to eye witnesses, a minor explosion occurred on the train during the morning rush-hour. Also on Friday morning, a man armed with a knife attacked a soldier in the centre of Paris; the prosecution service’s counter-terrorism section has launched an investigation.
