While in the capital and on the Great Hungarian Plain it has been raining all day, in northern parts of the country, especially in the Northern Mountains, the snow cover has grown to several centimetres thick.
According to the Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ), the snow is 17 centimetres on Kékestető and 8 in Hárskút, while in the lower parts of the country they measured 12 centimetres in Sopron and 8 in Kőszeg. In the higher parts of the Dunazug Mountains, a fresh snow layer of 15 to 25 and in some parts even 30 centimetres may be found.
In Nógrád County, several trucks jammed on the road due to heavy snowfall, and more than three thousand consumers remained without electricity, because tree branches, broken off by snow, downed power lines in the area.
OMSZ issued a warning for Budapest and several other counties (Pest, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Heves, Komárom-Esztergom and Nógrád) due to the heavy rain and snowfall. OMSZ also drew attention to the fact that drifting air and temperatures below 0 Celsius in large, wet areas may cause icing on roads.
We have collected some pictures of the beautiful, snow-covered northern areas and yesterday’s snow in Budapest:
