Finance Minister: Digitalisation Key to Improved Competitiveness

MTI-Hungary Today 2019.02.20.

Finance Minister Mihály Varga put the spread of digitalisation among Hungary’s top economic policy objectives after a meeting of the National Competitiveness Council on Tuesday.

The Council, a body of business leaders and experts which makes recommendations to the government, has met regularly for almost two years.

Speaking at a press conference, Varga said further strengthening Hungary’s competitiveness depends on digitalisation. He urged the creation of a quantifiable, straightforward system of goals, with central coordination. He also pressed for cooperation with economic players.

Public administration needs digitalisation just as much as SMEs, and developing digital skills needs to be given due attention in education, he added.

The Council believes the restructuring of vocational and continuing education, labourers with broad skill sets and the strengthening of innovative companies are also conditions for further development, Varga said.

The Council welcomed the latest GDP data showing Hungary’s economy expanded at a clip three times the EU average, he added.
