Governing parties Fidesz-KDNP have presented a list of mayor candidates for the upcoming local government elections in October, announced Lajos Kósa, managing deputy chairman of Fidesz, at a press event on Thursday. The party will run mayor candidates in a total number of 1167 cities and towns.
Kósa also added that the most prominent candidate of their list, the mayor of Budapest, will be current mayor István Tarlós, finally giving official confirmation regarding the matter. Almost 85% of the country will have the option to vote for Fidesz-KDNP candidates, said Kósa, while the party will also back another 274 independent candidates.
While Fidesz’s list may be ready and set for the upcoming election challenges, opposition parties are still in a state of flux as they are yet to name a mayor candidate for Budapest. Socialist politician Gyula Molnár stated in an interview that they are “way behind” with their plans, and it is “always difficult to select a candidate against a reigning mayor, as such a person can always campaign with the work done in the past four years”.
