Fidesz MEP: CoE Commissioner ‘Openly Supporting Violation of Laws’

According to an MEP of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz, Dunja Mijatovic, human rights commissioner of the Council of Europe, has “openly supported a violation of laws” through remarks suggesting that civil organisations could help rescued migrants ashore in the Mediterranean even against a ban by the member state concerned.

Balázs Hidvéghi said it was “nothing new” that “some wish to see Europe flooded by immigrants”, but added that Mijatovic’s remarks, made at a session of the European Parliament’s civil liberties committee on March 15, were “beyond common sense”. Hidvéghi called on the European Commission to take a clear position on the “scandalous remarks”.

MEPs of Fidesz have asked Ylva Johanssonn, EU commissioner for domestic affairs, to give an opinion concerning “the activities of migrant ships operated by civil organisations deliberately violating the law”.
