Fidesz: Left-Wing Municipal Councils Address Covid-19 Crisis with Austerity
MTI-Hungary Today 2020.05.23.
Left-wing local governments in Hungary are addressing the coronavirus crisis with austerity, “making layoffs and cutting salaries one after the other”, the spokesman for the parliamentary group of governing Fidesz said in a video sent to MTI on Saturday.
János Halász contrasted the austerity measures started by a number of left wing-led local governments with the central government’s efforts to preserve jobs, see that salaries are paid and ensure the livelihoods of families.
He pointed a finger at Péter Niedermüller, the mayor of the capital’s seventh district, for cutting the pay of kindergarten teachers; at eight district mayor András Pikó for “taking away the homes of the district’s health-care workers, police and firefighters”; and at Péter Márki-Zay, the mayor of Hódmezővásárhely, in the south of Hungary, for cutting the salaries of some public workers and laying off others.
“The left wing tightens belts, makes layoffs, raises taxes and lowers salaries in times of crisis, while the government does just the opposite: it supports job preservation, creates new workplaces, cuts taxes and provides wage support,” he said.
