Ferencváros Defeated by Chelsea on Stadium Opening Day

Ferencváros F.C. was defeated by Premier League side Chelsea 1-2 on a Sunday friendly match, celebrating the opening of the team’s newly built Groupama Arena, reported news agency MTI. The gala match began with opening speeches by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Government Commissioner of National Development and Gábor Kubatov, president of the club.

Viktor Orbán hailed the day as an important one for the nation, but mostly for Ferencváros fans, while praising their dedication for club and country. In his speech the Prime Minister also thanked those involved in the construction of the stadium and citizens of Hungary, for erecting such a building in difficult times. “They showed that Hungarians never give up”, concluded Viktor Orbán.

Balázs Fürjes,  Government Commissioner of National Development, put an emphasis on victory in his speech, saying that with this stadium not only fans, but citizens of Budapest and all Hungarians have won something. He reminded the audience of Ferencváros’s rich and glorious history, a club that’s name could not be taken away. “From now on, this stadium also cannot be taken away, it’s ours”, said Fürjes.

Gábor Kubatov, president of the club, also thanked those involved in the construction, especially thanking the Viktor Orbán. The opening ceremony saw an air display of three Hungarian Grippen fighter jets, after which Ferencváros managed to best the English side.
