Ferenc Puskás’ Club Budapest Honvéd Win Hungarian Championship Again After 24 Years – Highlights!

Tamás Székely 2017.05.30.

A real poacher’s effort from OTP League’s top goalscorer Márton Eppel in the second half helped Budapest Honvéd beat title rivals Videoton FC 1-0 and claim their first Hungarian league championship of the 21st century last Saturday.

On a dramatic evening in Kispest and in front of a capacity crowd at the Bozsik Stadium, about 8,000 fans watched as a tight game devoid of many chances was settled by a close-range finish by Márton Eppel on the hour mark. Although Videoton increased the pressure on the home team, they were not able to find the net in the remaining minutes. However, the second half has become memorable for Videoton forward Danko Lazovic’s strange behaviour as well.

Budapest Honvéd, the club of legendary Hungarian footballer Ferenc Puskás, win their first Hungarian NB I league championship since 1993 and their 14th in total since the club was founded in 1909. Honvéd is owned by American-Hungarian businessman George F. Hemingway and the club was managed by Italian head coach Marco Rossi, who has announced his resignation after the triumph, adding that “he’d better going out on top”.

Runner-up Videoton FC had to settle for the silver two years in a row. Last year’s champions Ferencváros finished only fourth despite beating arch-rivals Újpest 2-0 on the final day of the league season. The third position was claimed by this season’s surprise-package Vasas SC. The 2016/2017 football season is not over yet for Ferencváros and Vasas as the two Budapest-based clubs will clash in the Hungarian Cup final on Wednesday.
