Hungary’s health authority (ÁNTSZ) has issued the highest-degree heat alert for midnight on Friday to 4pm on Monday, the authority told the state news agency MTI. In the next few days, daily maximum temperatures will surge to around 38-39 °C, the National Weather Service said. Daily average temperatures will reach 28 and 30 °C. Temperatures are not expected to drop below 20 °C in big cities. Heat will be most intense in western and central areas; some parts of the country may see showers, however. A front on Monday will cool the air by 2-3 °C.
On Friday, heat will increase further, with temperatures of 32 to 36 °C expected during the day, with a lot of sunshine and small batches of cloud, sometimes accompanied by brief showers. UV rays will be extremely strong.
Saturday will see beaming, sunny weather with heat up to 34-38 °C and brief showers here and there in the evening hours. The early morning will be mild, with temperatures cooling down to between 18 and 23 °C.
On Sunday, showers and storms may develop as a result of a mild northwestern cold front, causing winds in that direction to pick up. Temperatures will work out between 32 and 39 °C.
Nights will also be increasingly hot with temperatures seldom falling below 20 °C.
Authorities have called upon the population to pay attention to increased intake of liquids and to stay in the shade if possible between 11 am and 3 pm. Children and animals should not be left in cars during the heat wave and those most at risk – such as the elderly, children and those suffering from heart disease – should be especially cautious.
