European League: Debrecen Qualifies For Third Round After Crushing Latvians 9-2 In Record Win

DVSC-TEVA, of Hungary’s second-largest city Debrecen, has crushed its Latvian opponent Skonto Riga 9-2 at a rematch of the second round of European League qualifiers in the Hungarian city on Thursday, qualifying for the third round with an aggregated score of 11-4.
Playing in front of 8500 spectators in the eastern city’s Nagyerdei Stadium, the team scored its largest-ever scale victory in any international cup series, the previous record being set in 1998 by a 6-0 win over a Belorussian club in the Intertoto club. Scoring its first goal as early as the seventh minute, the Hungarian team had practically won the match by half-time with a 5-0 lead over its Latvian opponent.
The second leg game was played in front of a good crowd thank to the ongoing Campus Festival held in the city of Debrecen this week. DVSC’s head coach Elemér Kondás said after the game that his team were playing fantatic. „Debrecen never stops at half time, no matter how big the difference, we are going forward always. We had good chances in Riga as well but we could not score as much as we wanted. We are now preparing for the next round, it is going to be a tough game against Norwegian side Rosenborg”, he said.

In the next, third round, DVSC is set to meet KR Reykjavík of Iceland or the Norwegian Rosenborg; the first match between the two teams saw the latter win 1-0 as guest. The club will need to win another two matches to make it to the master table.
