The government supports Olivér Várhelyi’s nomination for the next European Commission, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office told his regular press conference on Thursday.
Gergely Gulyás said that Várhelyi is “one of the best Hungarian experts on the EU … whose his skills cannot be questioned”. Várhelyi, as Hungary’s ambassador to the EU, has “committedly fought against efforts to force immigration on member states”, he added.
Várhelyi Might Have to Settle for a Different Commissioner Portfolio
Gulyás insisted that the only politician that “should have been entitled to the post” was László Trócsányi, “because he had topped the European Parliamentary election list, which was then supported by 53 percent of the voters”.
Trócsányi’s “role in preventing immigration” as justice minister, however, has “made Brussels see red”, he added.
