The leftist-liberal Democratic Coalition has called for wage hikes for teachers, saying that they earn 38 percent less than other university graduates.

At a press conference in Budapest, DK deputy head Péter Niedermüller cited data from the Central Statistical Office saying there were 4,534 vacant positions in education.

He noted that local authorities also have a possibility to support education and teachers.

Teachers Trade Union PSZ Calls for National Strike If Demands Not Met

Niedermüller pledged to renovate rundown municipality-owned apartments and offer them to young teachers if he is elected mayor of Budapest’s 7th district at the October 13 local elections.
