DK: At Least 700 Thousand People Without GP in Hungary

Currently, a total of 562 GP practices are waiting for owners in Hungary, which means the number of people who do not have a GP can be higher than 700 thousand, reported Hungarian news channel ATV, referring to Zoltán Komáromi, DK’s health politician.

Examples for villages with unfilled GP practices include Ibafa in Baranya County, where there has been no GP for the last 15 years, and Dióskál, where the situation is similar, but there is no doctor in Tiszabő, Jász-Nagykun,-Szolnok county since 2004 either. According to Komáromi, the number of vacant practices increased by more than 20 percent in only one year.

Last Saturday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced in a Facebook video that the government would like to create a community of GP practices, and their goal is to have no empty practices in Hungary. They also want to raise the standard of local care by providing the financial support GPs require.

The founder of the Online Organization of GPs told ATV that the GP profession needs to be made more attractive for doctors again. To reach this goal, the necessary financial and professional conditions must be created first. According to him, introducing the community practice (shared practices) is a forward-looking professional direction, which is supported by the organization, but only optionally.
