Director Appointed To Budapest’s Holocaust Memorial Centre

Following a lengthy period during which the position of the institution’s leader was vacant, the government has re-appointed historian Szabolcs Szita to head Budapest’s Holocaust Memorial Centre in Páva utca, District IX, the daily newspaper Népszabadság reports.

Mr. Szita confirmed his appointment but said that it is “too early” to speak of his plans. “I am currently gathering information”, he told the paper. The centre was left without a leader for over a year after Mr. Szita’s term as director was not lengthened by the government in spring 2014.

The memorial centre operates in a renovated synagogue that dates back to the 1920s and serves as a memorial and museum for and about Hungarian Jews who were killed in the Holocaust. The building was renovated and opened in its current function in 2004. It houses permanent and temporary exhibitions and a research centre.
