Last night saw the first qualifying round of the Europa League football competition, where the Hungarian teams of Diósgyőr and Ferencváros managed to secure their qualifications. Diósgyőr won against Maltese Birkirkara in Malta 4-1, and with the double victory and an aggregate of 6-2 they advance to the next round, while Ferencváros defeated also Maltese Silema Wanderers with an aggregate score of 3-2.
Diósgyőr played well in the first half, taking the lead by the goal of Szivics Tomiszlav, while just before half-time the home team managed to equalize. The second half began with great pressure on Diósgyőr, however, the team managed the weather the tough period as Husic scored a leading goal, while Barczi and Marjanovic scored the last two making it 4-1 to Diósgyőr. The team’s next round opponent will be either Bulgarian Litex Lovech or Moldovan team Veris Chisinau.
Ferencváros won 2-1 in the Puskás Ferenc Stadium on a grueling match, overshadowed by protests against the new fan screening regulations. Ferencváros will face Croatian team HNK Rijeka in the next round.
