The members of the Hungarian Diaspora Council resolutely protest against the intimidation and curbing of rights of ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia, the closing statement of the body’s Thursday meeting said.
In the statement, the council confirms its support for ethnic Hungarian communities in the Carpathian Basin in their fight for rights and secure living conditions.
The members of the council also welcomed that more than 1 million ethnic Hungarians have become part of the nation in legal terms as a result of simplified citizenship procedures and said this was of historic importance.
Further, they praised a proposal to allow Hungarian citizens without a permanent European Union address to vote in the European parliamentary elections. They said Hungarians played a special role in shaping the future of Europe and preserving European culture.
