Hungary will have a record 1,000 billion forints (EUR 2.9 billion) earmarked in next year’s budget to spend on defence, the defence minister said in a video message posted on the government’s Facebook page on Monday.
“It is a historic moment in terms of funding available for defence in the 2022 budget,” Tibor Benkő said, noting that the funding would be used to continue the modernisation of the armed forces.
Half of the amount will be spent on further developing the Hungarian army’s military technology and reviving the domestic defence manufacturing industry, the minister said. Other spending will include recruitment of general army staff and additional voluntary reserve staff, he said.
