Creating Tradition: Dessert of Budapest Awarded for the First Time
In a competition held for the first time this year, a grapey white chocolate confection was awarded The Dessert of Budapest. The dessert can be seen and tasted for the first time at the 8th annual Sweet Days Chocolate and Candy Festival in Budapest.
Organised for the first time this year, The Dessert of Budapest was awarded to the confection created by master pastry chef Péter Nagy of the famed Szamos Marzipan sweet shop. Csaba Rebrus, President of the Association of Hungarian Confectionery Manufacturers (HUNBISCO), said they wish to start a tradition by having the competition every year. In general, the Association aims to change the Hungarian people’s consumption of sweets in a way that emphasizes quality over quantity, he added.
Rebrus said that this year’s main theme was monodessert. The competing confections had to appeal to the general public’s palate, be simple enough for anyone to prepare, and have a selling price not exceeding HUF 1,000 (Eur 3,1). With the creation of the award, he hopes that he will be able to discover a dessert which has the potential to make it on the menus of both Hungarian restaurants and pastry shops — much like the famed Somlói Galuska, which became one of Hungary’s most famous desserts following an international competition.

The dessert can be tasted for the first time at the Sweet Days Chocolate and Candy Festival held between 14-16 of September at Szent István Square in downtown Budapest. The festival was held for the first time in 2011, and according to Rebrus, it triggered a gastronomic revolution in pastry, as those present are now well known throughout the country. The festival has since become the fourth biggest open-air, free, confection-based event in Europe, attracting more than 50,000 visitors yearly.
