Coronavirus: Poultry Producers Press for Import Restrictions

MTI-Hungary Today 2020.04.29.

Hungarian poultry farmers and processors are calling on the European Union to restrict imports from third countries, the head of the Poultry Products Council said on public television late on Tuesday.

Orders from restaurants and commercial accommodations, normally accounting for about 30pc of poultry producers’ business, have plummeted due to the novel coronavirus epidemic, Attila Csorbai said on news channel M1.

The glut caused by companies clearing their inventories has pushed poultry prices under costs, Csorbai said.

The price of poultry now stands at 230 forints (EUR 0.64) per kilogramme, down from 260-270 forints earlier, he added.
