Coronavirus: DK Calls on Gov’t to Join EU Job Protection Fund

The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) has called on the government to join a new job protection fund announced by the European Commission as part of its plan to offset the economic fallout of the novel coronavirus outbreak.
Addressing an online press conference on Thursday, DK MEP Klára Dobrev noted that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has unveiled a 100 billion euro plan to help companies keep their employees. The grant would be made available to member states in the form of preferential loans.
Dobrev said the Hungarian government was the only one in Europe that has refused to give cash handouts to its citizens during the crisis.
“All [Prime Minister] Viktor Orbán needs to do is join the European fund that would help temporarily cover the wages lost by hundreds of thousands of Hungarians,” Dobrev said. “We cannot sit idly by as thousands of families run out of money to do their shopping, while jobs are lost because businesses aren’t able to pay their employees full wages.”
