Coronavirus: DK Abandons Referendum Drive for Free Testing

MTI-Hungary Today 2020.10.20.

The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) party has abandoned its referendum initiative calling for free coronavirus testing, saying that such an operation would come with serious epidemiological risks.

DK launched an initiative for free coronavirus tests to be available for all Hungarians on September 24. Since the National Election Committee had rejected the call with what DK qualified as “an outrageous, untenable reasoning,” the party was certain that the supreme court would overturn the decision, DK said in a statement on Monday.

The party said that while they maintained that free testing for all was necessary, they would cease the initiative in view of the recent record-breaking spread of the virus in Hungary.

The election committee rejected the drive saying that the referendum’s subject did not fall under the purview of parliament, a condition of launching referendum drives. Further, they said the question submitted was not clear, as it may suggest that PCR tests were not available free of charge at all.
