Coronavirus: Final Exams Started Under Irregular Circumstances in Hungarian Secondary Schools

Fanni Kaszás 2020.05.04.

School exit examinations have started at 1,197 locations across the country on Monday, with over 70,000 students taking the Hungarian language and literature test on the first day. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, students and teachers had to take precautionary measures during the exams.

There has been no such special graduation since the Second World War, as now, a series of special measures were required to ensure the health of graduating students and their teachers due to the spread of the coronavirus. This year, only written exams will be held – except for some special cases where there is no other opportunity – which halves the number of personal contacts.

The tests started at 9am rather than the traditional 8am, to allow students and commuters to use public transport separately. Public education State Secretary Zoltán Maruzsa said that during the tests, students would be provided with face masks and disinfectant, and that a maximum 10 students would be in the same classroom to ensure the necessary distance between them.

According to reports, on the day of the exam, they tried to follow the precautions due to the epidemic and kept the appropriate distance, but police officers patrolled several places and, if necessary, warned students not to group. Institutions were also set up: students could enter some schools only after hand disinfection, or there were separate entrances for instructors and graduates.

For the exam itself, mid-level candidates were given a reading comprehension task on the history of books, reading, and codexes. In the second part, they could choose to analyze a short story by István Fekete, a poem by János Arany, or a poem by Árpád Tóth. Several students said that they found the exam easy, like a regular high school test, while the most popular task among graduates was the short story analysis. The exams will continue with mathematics on Tuesday, and history on Wednesday.
